Check Out This Dwarf 1949 Mercury

There are few hot rods cooler than the ’49 Merc.  A family friend had one years ago – with its chopped top, bulbous shape, and loud exhaust, it was the epitome of the lead sled.  So how do you make a ’49 Mercury even cooler?  Make a hand-fabricated dwarf version of it, naturally.

A reader sent us this video, and it’s just too cool not to share.  A man named Ernie Adams created his first dwarf car in 1965, powered by a motorcycle engine.  In 1980, he and his friend Daren Schmaltz built dwarf cars that actually bore that name, and Mr. Adams has continued to build a new car every few years since then.

According to the video, the entire car is hand-fabricated except for the mirrors and spotlight.  It has a Toyota 1290cc four cylinder under its tiny hood, and he said that he can get it up to 100 miles per hour.  It apparently has two rows of seats, and he can drive the car.  He noted that the dashboard is fabricated from a refrigerator door – but it has the identical shape and functionality of a real ’49 Mercury’s dashboard.  The rear wheels are even hidden behind functional fender skirts.

Seeing people with a passion for their hobbies just puts a big smile on my face.  I love that Mr. Adams has such a talent for building miniature classic cars and that he has shared it with us.
